AdakahSuplemen Penting Untuk Kesihatan?
Pentingnya nutrisi untuk kesihatan kepada
manusia dah lama kita ketahui.
Sebelum masuk ke tahun 1960, minat dalam soal
kesihatan yang berkait dengan nutrisi ini hanya
lebih tertumpu kepada nak cegah keparahan penyakit yang berpunca
daripada masalah kekurangan nutrien contohnya seperti penyakit skurvi, riket, dan pellagra
sahaja. Kemudian, sebanyak 50 nutrien penting
(terdiri dari vitamin, mineral, antioksidan, kofaktor, asid amino penting, dan
asid lemak penting) telah dikenalpasti. Bukan itu saja, bahkan
cadangan untuk pengambilan nutrien secara harian pun berjaya dibentuk
ke dalam satu garis panduan yang khusus pula. Tak cukup dengan itu,
kesan dari pengenalan garis panduan cadangan ini turut telah
terbukti meningkatkan nilai yang berharga juga dalam menghapuskan penyakit
parah yang disebabkan dari masalah kekurangan nutrien ini.
Sepanjang berdekad yang lalu, tumpuan kemudiannya telah beralih
fokus iaitu lebih kepada peranan diet dan nutrisi untuk kesihatan
pada jangka masa yang lebih panjang. Kini nutrisi
telah berjaya dibuktikan kerana peranannya dalam kesihatan jangka
panjang pada organ jantung, tulang, sendi, mata, sistem saraf, juga sistem imun.
Tapi malangnya, usaha-usaha seperti ini agak
sukar untuk dilanjutkan dengan teliti dalam bentuk ujikajinya,
sebahagian punca dan sebabnya ialah kerana kekangan jangka masa yang
bakal terlibat. Banyak daripada usaha-usaha gigih yang lebih kepada
interaksi dalaman ini perlu mengambil masa hingga ke beberapa dekad
(bahkan mungkin sepanjang hayat) untuk teruskan dengan ujikajinya.
Sangat sukar untuk menjalankan penyelidikan yang merangkumi lebih
dari beberapa tahun. Walaupun demikian, sekurang-kurangnya kemajuan dalam usaha
penyelidikan epidemiologi dan klinikal telah menemui banyak maklumat
mengenai kesan diet dan pengambilan nutrien untuk capai kesihatan
jangka panjang.
Dalam tahun-tahun kebelakangan ini, penyelidik telah memberi
perhatian lebih kepada pemakanan tambahan sebagai komponen diet yang
sihat. Kajian-kajian ini telah menggunakan pelbagai kaedah
penyelidikan bahkan telah menghasilkan hasil kajian, baik dari segi positif maupun yang negatif.
Sebagaimana disyorkan oleh pakar pemakanan untuk kesihatan anda,
sebenarnya suplemen tambahan boleh disimpulkan bahawa ianya untuk
membantu anda agar menutup jurang perbezaan antara apa yang badan
anda perlukan dengan apa yang diet anda boleh berikan untuk anda. Sesetengah makanan tambahan itu ada
yang sudah diterima untuk dijadikan sebahagian dari amalan penjagaan
kesihatan buat pengamal-pengamal dalam dunia penjagaan kesihatan
moden. Termasuklah, contohnya, peranan pengambilan suplemen kalsium
dan suplemen vitamin D dalam mengekalkan ketumpatan tulang yang
sihat dan peranan suplemen asid folik dalam mencegah kecacatan pada
pertumbuhan dan kelahiran. Tapi, di tempat-tempat yang lain (seperti
mengambil contoh peranan suplemen antioksidan untuk kesihatan
jantung), kesan hasilnya kurang konsisten, maka kesimpulan yang
lebih kukuh untuk dibuat itu masih tetap kontroversi lagi untuk
diputuskan.
Di bawah berikut ini ada senarai penyelidikan
peer-review yang menilai sebarang kemungkinan yang menyokong manfaat
kesihatan kesan dari pengambilan suplemen tambahan serta
makanan-makanan yang ada fungsi baik untuk kesihatan. Senarai ini
belum habis lagi. Kertas-kertas telah dipilih berdasarkan merit
saintifik juga berdasarkan topik yang ada kaitannya dengan bidang
yang dibincangkan-tanpa ambil kira sama ada keputusan yang
diperolehinya itu positif atau negatif. Senarai ini menyediakan

harapan ianya akan menyumbang kepada pemahaman yang lebih baik lagi
